Fiery Rain

In early fall, after a parched summer that fueled wildfires in the mountains east of Grand Teton National Park, I set out to photograph the sunrise over the Tetons—a pursuit that’s often unpredictable. On this late September morning, I captured a rare, once-in-a-lifetime shot. The scene was breathtaking: vibrant fall colors of yellow, orange, and red painted the forest, while the Teton peaks stood sharp and clear, dusted with early snow. Above, dramatic clouds glowed with pink and purple hues, catching the first light as a light rain fell, carried by a gentle breeze. A smoky haze from the distant wildfires lingered in the lowest valleys, adding an ethereal layer to the landscape and enhancing the surreal beauty of the moment. Photo © copyright by Ammon Jeffs.
