Calf Creek Falls #1

I drove to the Calf Creek Falls trailhead late at night, so I could hike in early to catch these falls during the peace and quiet of the pre-dawn hour when I could get the best exposure times.
I began the three mile hike at 4am, feeling my way up the trail and happy that it reflected just enough light for me to see it. When I was about halfway to the falls, as I went through a grove of scrub oak, I heard a loud splash in the water nearby. My heart nearly stopped for a moment. Then it dawned on me: I had heard that sound in the woods before! It was the warning slap of a beaver tail. I breathed easier and enjoyed my hike in the stars.
The falls were stunning and their roar echoed off the canyon walls while the birds chirped merrily in morning song. The peaceful scene was mesmerizing. Photo © copyright by Ammon Jeffs.
